About Me
Thank you for dropping by to this “About Me” page, as you may be wondering, “Who is this “Old Fellow” anyways?”
My actual name is Carl. I am a 61 year old Canadian, and happily married to a “kiwi” New Zealander. We have been blessed with 4 GREAT kids, ages 27, 25, 22 and 20.
I am an avid Christian, and LOVE reading and studying the Bible. There is always something new and wonderful, that can apply to my own life, and what I am facing at any particular time. During the weekdays, I work for a company that has me working on various duties. A typical day might include pick/packing in the warehouse, building maintenance, or writing creative environmental posts for the company’s Marketing Department. The articles I have written for my work are found on the page “My Work Articles”. Our planet earth, and the environment is something I am very passionate about. It is wonderful to have a job to provide for the family. I also have the privilege and honour to be a lay pastor for a small church congregation in the village where we live. Life is extremely busy, but good.
With heart disease issues on my dad’s side of the family, and mental health issues on my mom’s side of the family, after 35 years of not running, I laced up the shoes and started to run, simply for my health. Running seems to keep my “ticker” ticking, and has been keeping my mind more clear.
The “blogging” part came quite by accident. As I prepared for my 1st Half Marathon in the fall of 2013, I set up a Facebook page, to keep me accountable to those kind enough to “follow” my page, and also as a platform for fundraising for the charity I was representing. I called the page, “The Old Fellow Goes Running”. Along the way, I added a few stories for fun. After the Half Marathon, several of my friends did NOT want me to close the page, but to keep writing (and running), and do NOT change the name. So I listened, and here I am 🙂
So I sincerely want to thanking for stopping by, do stop by again. Even better, why not hit the “Follow” button, and we will “run” this race of life together. Also, please be sure to check out the Facebook link.
Life is so incredibly precious, and whether you know me in the “physical realm”, or have simply come across this page and see my reflection, I pray that it would leave an imprint into your heart, inspire you, and make you a better person. Enjoy each day you have on earth, and live it to the fullest………God bless……..Carl 🙂
“The important people in our lives leave imprints. They may stay or go in the physical realm, but they are always there in your heart, because they helped form your heart. There’s no getting over that” ~Rachael Cohn~

Writing really is a great way to get it all out there, eh? With my blog, I find that I don’t even care how many people read it, but just writing a post and publishing it is “therapy” in itself.

It really is great therapy Emily, whether people read it or not.. Still finding my way around with building the website. It has been fun getting to “publish” it. It is so “cool” with the technology. Your blog was what got me thinking it would be quite neat, 1st with the Facebook page, and now with the website….so THANK YOU!!! 🙂

Grounded and appreciated “About Me” share, Carl. The only matter I might take issue with is your (rightfully chosen) reference to “old fellow.” At 59, I consider myself quite distant from “old.” 🙂

Thanks Eric so much, the more I do embrace life, the younger I do feel (but I did make that promise to my friends, not to change the name..lol :)) I absolutely love the warmth of your smile, and the sparkle in your eyes in your picture. It shows a lot of where your “true age” is….the age that is in in your heart. 🙂

Carl, that is thoughtful of you to acknowledge the warmth in my smile and the sparkle in my eyes. Other than a fellow yoga student, I’ve not had someone share such kind words about the photo (not that I need them). You speak a language I know well — matters of and from the heart. Thank you.

Thank you so much for dropping by and the follow. Am very interested and fascinated by the theme of your blog. Expat living does interest me, but not sure about the family. Every day I get an e-mail from http://internationalliving.com/, so I am familiar, but it will be really neat to have that connection of personal experiences through your blog. 😉 THANK YOU! 🙂

Hi there
I have not gotten around to it yet but someday will post about International Living; I’m not a fan. They are a business trying to scam you into spending thousands of dollars on seminars you don’t need. All the information they print in their paid subscriptions is easily found with good internet research and various expat forums and blogs. Their format is obsolete and they know it which is why they target very wealthy people over 60 who want to buy expensive property. I assume that’s not you so don’t pay much attention to them.
If I can answer any questions or steer you to some website or forum, I’d be happy to help
Happy holidays

Hi Michelle,
Thank You, and I am so glad you found me. 🙂
I am sincerely sorry about your knee, and hoping it will heal speedily without any complications. It must be really tough being a runner, and have to “shelf” the runners for the time being while your knee mends and repairs itself. When you do get the go ahead to lace up the sneakers it will be that much sweeter. 🙂
Thank you for your kind words and follow. Looking forward to reading your blog. Your posts are positive and uplifting, no matter what “curve balls” life throws at you.
Sincerely,
Carl

HI, Carl. Thanks for stopping by my blog and following it. I am enjoying my visit to yours. Very impressed with your attachment to running. Sounds exactly like mine to biking. I used to run, but found I like the bike better. I do have to walk and do other ‘weight-bearing exercises’ to complete it, though. My family tree also includes Alzheimer’s and dementia, so I have researched the maintenance of mental powers. If you saw today’s post you have probably also run across my page on the brain and exercise. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Tony. I discovered your blog and your post today through a reblog, and found it excellent. I do mix the biking and running up myself, as each day for work, will drive 35k’s to one side of the city where I work, and then bike the remaining 15k’s to work. (found 50k’s each way too much on top of a physical job) 🙂
But I do love running, and it has been helping with my mental health, and heart health.
I really appreciate your blog of what I have seen. Looks like you do a pile of research into it, as well as creating the infographics. Looking forward to reading more! 🙂

Yes, I am a retired journalist so writing a blog is like a busman’s holiday. Must admit that I have learned a ton since starting it back in 2010. In my spare time I have taken a number of courses in longevity, the brain, nutrition, etc. I am a good customer of The Great Courses that you see advertised all the time. BTW, quit calling yourself an old man. I turned 75 on January 26. You can read my birthday post on the blog. I have a daughter who just turned 20. Do the math. You aren’t an old man, particularly if you are running and biking. Good work. I only got healthy in the last five years, you have a wonderful head start on being a healthy senior.

It seems like you have a lot of unique stories on here. I’m a Christian as well and I use to do a bit of running myself in High School. I was mainly an 800 meter runner! My passion is really soccer though. But hey, I like your thoughts and look forward to reading some stuff!

Thanks for stopping by Troy. Yeah I noticed on your blog one of your categories had post more of a Christian nature. Always excited to connect with other Christian bloggers. I have a church blog as well and pretty much keep the 2 separate, but occasionally will share a bit of my faith on my main blog.
And an 800 metres would be a tough race. It would be like giving full out everything in the tank with no pacing whatsoever during the entire distance. I imagine soccer players would pretty much run for 10k or more in a game. Always amazed with the stamina players like yourself would have on the field.
Looking forward to checking out your blog out more as well! 🙂
