To Indulge or Not To Indulge

Well, to change things up a bit, I have decided to do something EXTREMELY unusual for me, which is to write a short post.  Hopefully you did not faint from shock…haha   🙂

Juicy, mouth watering blackberries.

Juicy, mouth watering blackberries.

So yesterday, I was out running on a trail, when I came across the “motherlode” of a blackberry patch.  Loaded with luscious, mouth watering, tasty looking, berries, ripe for the picking.  After an hour of running they would be the ideal item for refueling.

I reach down to pick one, and then stop in my tracks.  What do I see?  Should I indulge or should I not indulge?

One more picture of yesterday's trail run! :)

One more picture of yesterday’s trail run! 🙂

All part of a post I have just started called “risk”.  My “long” posts take quite a while to complete, (at least 2 weeks for this one, due to marathon training) so stay tuned!  🙂

  1. I always eat blackberries from the bush and I haven’t had any deadly side effects…yet! 😁

  2. I like short posts. Short and sharp. Just like the juice of a blackberry can be.

  3. Great food for refueling! 🙂 Love the pictures! My sister in law loves to stop for berries on our long runs together! haha!

    • Rachel Ann….this is SO wonderful to have you drop by. Thank you for your kind words about the pictures. And how cool is that, that you are able to go running with your sister in law! Berries ARE the ultimate refueling food. 🙂

Hoping your sister in law was very careful, and she did not see, what I had seen. Sometimes those berries look so yummy and scrumptious, we just want to jump right in, and pick away…haha!!!

Thank you for sharing. Have happy (and safe) runs! 🙂

  4. Blackberries are really nice. Never had any side effects from eating them straight off the brambles. If you got the time look up jam recipes. Quick tip on picking them: go for the berries lower down the stalk, they tend to be sweeter and give the nearer berries time to fully ripen. Just watch your hands on the thorns 🙂

    • SO wonderful to have you drop by. Thank you for reading and sharing. I would love to try some jam recipes. It would be an incredible treat during the winter, when there is 3 feet of snow outside.

And that is an excellent point about going for berries further down the stalk. I never thought of that. I LOVE eating berries right off the brambles, no side effects for me either. Was just too afraid to pick the one patch, with what was lurking amongst the brambles. There was another patch that was safe to indulge however! 🙂

  5. Nice post. Short is good sometimes. Hope you indulged. There are a lot of blackberries at the delta. Hope to pick some next weekend!

    • Thank you Terri! Actually, I am quite enjoying the short post. Instead of having it in “draft form” for days on end, in that I kept going back to until it was published, I just sat down, typed it out in one go, and published it. 🙂

I did indulge, but not the patch where the picture is taken. It just was not safe.

That is really exciting you hope to be blackberry picking this weekend. So cool! 🙂 Please be careful if you go right in amongst the brambles. You just never know what is in there. Just concerned for you Terri!

Thanks for stopping by to comment! 🙂

  6. I miss blackberries. They don’t grow up here. I suspect bears like blackberries too. Hmmm…

    • I am sincerely sorry to hear that Angie. And here I was thinking you must be in “blackberry heaven”. 🙂 Bears certainly do have a liking for berries. I wonder if that is why they are called “bears”..haha!! 🙂

But seriously, I do keep looking over my shoulders for bears when picking berries. I have not seen any bears this year, but they are around. My wife had one run in front of her car a couple of weeks ago. And twice I’ve seen a bear (within a 2k radius of the berry patch) while riding my mountain bike on these trails.
Might be the same bear, or might not, as it was a year apart.

Of what was in that berry patch, I try keep away from, almost as much as I would a bear. I am THAT much afraid of it.

Thank you for stopping by to read and share Angie! Have a great rest of the week! 🙂

  9. Ps. I picked some blackberries on the way home the other day. I took a short cut through a little pathway and I noticed some berries hanging over the wall, so I picked a few and took them home.

    Lovely to eat wild fruit.

  11. So did you indulge? 😉 I will pick up the blackberries just for the taste – they looked so tempting! Short post is great too, I always enjoy reading your posts whether it is short or long ones:)

    • Awww thanks Indah, I really appreciate this. You are such an encourager. 🙂

Yes, berries are SO tempting. But this patch I did not indulge. If you look very carefully in the picture, you will see something hiding amongst the berry brambles. Almost will seem like a “Where’s Waldo” game, but it is there….haha. 🙂

I might go back today to see if it is still there. If it is still there, I will take another picture or two, have some fun and see if any of my blogger friends can guess what I am seeing. Maybe even throw a prize into the mix! 🙂

I like adventure, and having the odd risk, but what is in this patch is just too risky for me to pick these berries Indah!

As always, thanks so much for dropping by to read and comment!

  12. Oh how I miss plump, juicy blackberries right pff the vine! It brings back childhood memories of growing up in New England when my parents would stuff us kids in to the family wagon (two in the “way back” area, no seatbelts of course) and we’d head off in to the steaming heat to go pick blackberries for the day. We’d come home hours later with black stained fingers, full bellies and big smiles.

    I hope you indulged! 😉

    • I love your description Tricia, and I too remember those days of riding around in the car in the days when there was no such invention yet of a seatbelt. Had to laugh as you described your parents would “stuff us kids in the family wagon”. I can identify, and can vividly picture those black stained fingers, full bellies, and big smiles..

In my case the berries were along fence rows on the family farm. Often I would eat until I could eat no more, but occasionally would bring a container and fill it for my siblings, and mom and dad to enjoy at suppertime.

Thank you for sharing such beautiful memories! 🙂

  13. I used to pick cashew fruits that used to grow in the orchards behind my institute 🙂

P.S. The photo of the water in the ground looks like a silhouette of a giant man hell bent on stopping your path.

    • Haha….I did notice that as well Prajakta, after I loaded the photos onto the computer how much this really did look like a giant holding his ground on that trail.

Now cashew nuts, I would have absolutely NO idea what to look for, if I were in India. My knowledge of picking cashews is going to the store, and picking out a glass jar of roasted cashews with added salt. Then I “Indulge” once home, and eat the whole jar in one sitting! 😀

Thank you so much for stopping by Prajakta. 🙂
